This could be a mild one which could go away on your own but in the severe cases; it can be very painful and may require medical assistance at any moment.

Symptoms of heartburn

There are various symptoms of heartburn. One person may show one symptom of that aspect and another person may show another. But there are a few which is common to all people. But it is a bit difficult to differentiate heartburn from other such heart diseases at the first glance for the fact that, all these diseases have similar symptoms and one has to use differential diagnosis so that he is sure that it is heartburn and nothing else.

The symptoms are:
  1. The burning sensation in the upper abdomen is perhaps one of the most common symptoms of heart burning. The intensity of the pain or the burning sensation could be different in different people and hence some people may tolerate it better than others but none the less, this is a common symptom that will be prevalent in most cases of heartburn.
  2. Difficulty in swallowing is also one of the very common symptoms of the heartburn. While there is acidity going inside the stomach, and the foods are regurgitating back into the esophagus, then the food swallowing process will face great difficulty and you will find it very hard to swallow as there is acidity going on inside the stomach.
  3. Another common symptom is that the foods will return back from the stomach into the esophagus. This occurs due to the fact that, the lower esophageal sphincter which prevents the food from the stomach back into the esophagus, is failing to do its work properly. For whatever reasons, the sphincters that are present throughout our body, many times they fail to work properly and liquids are leaked back into the opposite direction. This is when such situations such as heartburn occur. Along with the foods, acids will also reflux back into the esophagus thus making the matter even worse.
Diagnosis of heartburn

Without proper tests, it is very difficult to diagnose heartburn as many different diseases have similar symptoms. For example, hiatal hernia pain is also somewhat similar. But endoscopy is perhaps one of the common methods to diagnose heartburn and other such diseases.
In endoscopy, a flexible tube is passed down in the food pipe and then the structure of the food pipe is checked. If a biopsy is needed, it can be taken. Hence endoscopy provides the most convenient method to diagnose heartburn.

Special X-ray and pH tests are used in other cases.
